The Flathead River system has fluvial trout that move to their natural tributaries for the winter, and adfluvial trout that move to Flathead Lake for the winter. So, we are primarily a summertime fishery. The most productive dry fly fishing months for cutthroat are July, August, September and early October. Nymphing can be successful in late June. The river is often too high, muddy and dangerous to fish during spring runoff, which can stretch from Mid-May to the end of June, but we offer lake fishing opportunities during those times. Pre-runoff in March, April and early May can be a fun time to fish the Flathead with virtually no river traffic, eager fish and great scenery.
